What is Aromatherapy? Aromatherapy is a gentle but powerful form of natural healing using therapeutic grade essential oils in a way that can positively effect our physical, emotional and mental health. Pure essential oils are the life force of plants and can be used to complement traditional medicine. Essential oils are found in flowers, herbs, leaves, twigs bark, fruit, wood or resin. They are highly concentrated, aromatic and volatile substances that are extracted by distillation or expression. Aromatherapists recommend massage and inhalation as the most effective methods of introducing these wonderful gifts from Nature into the human body. For massage, a good quality carrier oil, lotion, cream or gel is used to deliver the essential oils to the area needed. For inhalation, a bowl of hot water, diffuser, warm bath, sauna - or something as simple as a few drops on a tissue is used. While modern science can mimic the fragrance of some essential oils, they have been unable to deliver the therapeutic benefits of essential oils. How Do Essential Oils Enter the Body? Essential Oils enter the body through the skin and through the olfactory system ( sense of smell). Skin The small essential oil molecules are able to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. Massage is the most common way of introducing essential oils to the body. Smell The olfactory system has direct access to the brain. It sends the chemical messages to the limbic part of the brain.
