Reflexology

Reflexology is considered as a type of massage but it is also an alternative or complementary medicine. Reflexology has therapeutic effects for a wide range of medical conditions. It is similar to the practice of acupuncture. Just like acupuncture, reflexology is based on the concepts of balance, energy flow, meridians and holistic healing. There are specific points or areas on the hands, feet and ears that correspond to specific organs and ailments.

Unlike acupuncture, however, reflexology does not use needles in stimulating the vital points. Practitioners of reflexology use their hands, fingers and rollers to stimulate the areas of the feet and hands. Some reflexology therapists may also use massage vibrators. General body massage may also be given by some reflexology therapists. Essential oils and other liniments may also be incorporated in the reflexology therapy session.

Although there is no universal consensus among reflexology practitioners about the exact therapy modules for specific ailments, there are many unifying concepts that are agreed upon. For instance, the belief that specific areas on the foot correspond to certain organs is a unifying theme. There are generalised charts that are used as reference by most reflexology practitioners. These charts are like guide maps that show the areas that need to be stimulated.

The therapeutic benefits of reflexology mainly include pain relief and relaxation. Blood circulation is also improved in the process. Since the feet are the ones that are mainly stimulated, reflexology is considered as safe.
