I feel sore after my massage - is this normal? Massage such as sports, will loosen up your muscles and relieve most of your tension. However because the muscles get such a good workout you may be left feeling sore and stiff the next day. For the following next three days after a deep treatment rub in products like deep heat, comfrey or arnica creams into the affected muscles. Place hot packs onto the area, and enjoy hot baths and showers to relieve any discomfort. On the forth day you will feel the beneficial effects of the massage, feeling loose, and comfortable, with a greater range of movement. Also note that even though a single massage will be enjoyable, the effects of massage are cumulative and a course of massage treatments will bring the most benefits. With the ongoing treatment it would be expected for your regular massages to have the effect of strengthening and toning the entire body mechanism and so help to prevent unnecessary strains and injuries that otherwise might occur due to excess tension and any resulting structural weakness. What should I do after a massage? A hot bath or shower is recommended as soon as possible after the massage to increase blood circulation through the body. It is advised that you drink a litre of water after the shower so that the toxins released during massage can be excreted in your urine. The more that you receive massage work, the less likely you will experience post-session soreness. What should I tell the therapist about myself? Good communication is essential to an effective massage. As a client, it is good to communicate what you hope to get out of the session, for example do you want pain relief or relaxation, full body massage or focus on a specific area, the amount of pressure that you find comfortable, preferred techniques, and past medical history and current physical condition. What types of questions will my therapist ask? You will be required to fill in a fairly extensive consultation form (it is suggested you arrive 10-15 min early so you will have enough time to fill it in and ensures your session is spent on the table rather than filling out a form). Some of the questions covered in the consultation form will be: Past and current injuries, short medical overview (circle the complaint: eg diabetes, headaches etc), current practitioners, medications and supplements. What should I expect on the day? Your massage session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music will be played to help you relax, and you will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort. Craniosacral Therapy Craniosacral Therapy helps to assess the state of the Craniosacral System and then to bring it into balance. The system incorporates the skull, spine and sacrum (tailbone). A Craniosacral Therapist is attuned to the rhythm and movements of the Craniosacral System. The dural tube encases the skull and spine, and attaches at key places in the skull and at the sacrum. As the cerebral spinal fluid produced in the brain flows back and forth between the head and tailbone, movement of the bones occur. When a trauma or imbalance occurs to the body it can affect other parts of the body as well. So if, for example, an injury occurs in the knee, the effects can also be felt in the bones and muscles of the spine, back, and head. The Craniosacral System influences most of the other systems in the body, allowing Craniosacral Therapy to be effective in treating many health problems. Craniosacral therapy has helped many people with migraines, sinus headaches, fibromyalgia, anxiety, insomnia, TMJ (jaw joint), sciatica, chronic pain, and stress. It has also helped many with ADD and ADHD. In deeper work, bone (osseous) structures are used as levers. Bones, and the tissues connected to them, are repositioned, bringing about a change in pain levels and an improvement in posture. Myofascial Release Gentle, prolonged stretching of connective tissue is used to bring about changes in posture and relieve the causes of chronic pain syndromes, which have often been troubling the client for many years. What styles of massage do you offer? Remedial Therapy & Pain Release A Full Body Massage is used to balance painful parts of the body with all the other muscles and joints. For instance, if there is a spasm in a back muscle which is being anchored by a tightness in a hamstring or calf, working on the hamstring or calf, as well as the back, is essential to relieve the back pain. Remedial massage is combined with myotherapy and acupressure techniques to put the body into a balanced state. Only then can the body's own natural healing process work in the way it was designed to operate. For the body to operate at its maximum potential it must receive adequate, appropriate nourishment. General information about nutrition and diets is available from Ken. Detailed assessments are made by Annabel, the Naturopath in our practice, who can also prescribe supplements and herbal mixes. What information do I need prior to my first appointment? To get the most benefit from your initial consultation, it would be of great assistance if you would bring along any medication (pharmaceutical or natural) that you are currently taking. It would also be appreciated if you could take notice of your daily dietary intake between now and your appointment time and if necessary take some notes to bring with you. For accuracy of the two procedures used, please remove coloured contact lenses and any coloured nail polish from your right index finger. If possible, it is best if you refrain from eating or drinking caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate or coke) for at least 2 hours prior to your appointment. As much of our treatments involves dietary change, it is often suggested that you hold off on doing your grocery shopping until after your appointment. This ensures that you stock up on the foods required for your program, making it easier to be organized and stick to things. I am worried that I will not be able to stick to my treatment plan. The program that will be designed for you is very effective and will have achieved extremely good results in countless patients. To achieve these results will require some motivation and dedication on your part. Often, the first week is the most difficult as you are changing old habits and routines. If you can be given one word of advice, it is PERSEVERANCE! By the end of the first week you will find that these changes become easier to incorporate into your lifestyle and you will begin to notice a positive change in your general health and energy levels. It is said that it only takes three week for your body to become accustomed to new habits - if you consistently make the effort to incorporate a new habit daily for three weeks (for example, getting up a half an hour early every morning to go for a walk, not sprinkling salt on your food) by the end of the three weeks, your body will have incorporated these changes into your daily routine, as a new habit. I feel worse after the first week after seeing my naturopath? Why do I feel so bad? Occasionally, during the first few days of treatment, people may experience what is termed a "healing crisis". As toxins are rapidly eliminated, a type of "cellular diarrhoea clears out the whole body rather dramatically. You may experience headaches, muscle aches and pains; skin outbreaks or excessive thirst and it may seem as though you are temporarily far worse off than you were before the treatment started. Do not be alarmed, because the healing crisis is a sure sign that the body is throwing off, rapidly, the wastes, ill health and toxins that have accumulated over the years and that your health is on the improve. When you have finished throwing off these wastes, you will wake up one morning feeling clear of eye, springy of step and happy in mind with a new experience of what we call health. Radiant energy, joy, and grace combine to put you into the state of well being where anything is possible. Experience your healing crisis, but stay with it until your joyful state of well being is a living reality. What health insurance benefits should I expect? It is best to contact your health insurer direct to find out specifically what you are covered for. Naturopathy is accepted by most health funds under the extras banner of health insurance. The amount you receive back will depend on your specific health fund and what level of cover you have. What to expect in a first appointment? At this appointment, you will be asked a series of questions regarding your past and current medical and lifestyle history, diet, daily habits, level of exercise, working life, history of family illness, allergies, current medication or supplement program, previous treatment. From the information obtained, your practitioner will then devise a natural treatment program unique to you. Your individualised treatment program will be gradual and can be adapted as your health improves and will include ways in which you can make positive changes in many areas of your life to live a healthier life! Indeed, because naturopathy involves lifestyle changes and changes in eating habits, as well as the use of supplements and herbs, the therapeutic plan requires much more patient involvement in the process of getting well. How long does a consultation take? Your first consultation will last for approximately 45-60 minutes and follow up sessions typically last for approximately 30 minutes. What to look for in choosing a naturopath? Since you're entrusting your health to a naturopath, you should feel comfortable in their professionalism and training. Working with this person requires you to be partners in your health. In addition, the practitioner/client relationship is different from what you may be used to. The naturopath will direct you to natural ways to improve your health, but you must make the effort to change and manage your lifestyle.
